Coaching: Joins the Missouri coaching staff after guiding one of the nation’s leading offensive units at Western Michigan University. At Mizzou, Cubit will look to install the same type of wide-open, high-powered offense that Western Michigan ran during his three years as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator.
Under the tutelage of Cubit, WMU quarterback Tim Lester became one of the top QBs in the country and departed Western Michigan as the Mid-America Conference all-time leader in passing and total offense. Lester left WMU as the fourth all-time leading passer in NCAA history (11,299 yards) and sixth all-time in touchdown passes (87).
In 1999, Cubit’s offense broke 26 school and conference records. The Broncos were ranked 11th nationally in passing offense (311.8 yards per game) and 23rd in scoring offense (31.1 ppg). In 1998, Western Michigan became just the 14th school to have a 3,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard runner and 1,000-yard receiver. The Broncos repeated that feat in 1999.
For his efforts, Cubit was a Broyles Award nominee as well as the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year nominee.
Cubit’s 1998 WMU offense ranked ninth in passing (310.4 yards per game), 12th in total offense (467.9 yards per game) and 20th in scoring (32.7 ppg).
During the 1997 campaign, the Broncos ranked 23rd nationally in passing offense (253.82 yards per game).
Cubit’s success has not gone unnoticed by his peers, as American Football Quarterly asked him to author a piece on creating a balanced offense.
Before Western Michigan, Cubit compiled a 34-18-1 record over five seasons (1992-96) as head coach at Widener University in Philadelphia, winning two Middle Atlantic Conference championships and coach of the year awards.
He inherited a team that had a 3-7 record and rebuilt the Pioneers to the point they qualified for the 1994 and 1995 NCAA Division III playoffs.
Cubit also served as Widener’s athletics director (1995-96) and assistant athletics director (1992-95).
Earlier, Cubit had collegiate stints coaching running backs at Akron (1990), quarterbacks at Florida (1989), defensive backs at Central Florida (1983-85) and backs/receivers at Swarthmore (1975-76).
As a successful head prep mentor, Cubit compiled seasonal showings of 8-3, and school best-ever marks of 11-1 and 11-2 at Martin County High School in Stuart, Fla. (1986-88), which included two regional one sectional championship.
In 1982, he directed the newly-founded Academy Park High of his native Sharon Hill, Pa. to a 10-0 mark and a conference title.
From 1977-81, Cubit directed Sharon Hill High to a 39-9-2 slate, finishing no lower than third in the conference each season. He inherited a team that was coming off of 1-8 season.
