Defensive End

  • 2009 Mizzou ROARS Male Courage Award

High-impact athlete who has a chance to be a big contributor at defensive end, with the graduation of both of Mizzou's starting defensive ends from a year ago ... Had a labrum tear repaired in his left shoulder after the 2008 season, and was expected to be limited during spring, but he came out and gave a great effort during spring camp, and was very impressive ... Did well enough in the spring to lock down the #1 spot on the depth chart at one end position heading into fall camp ... Was named the recipient of the Male Courage Award at the first annual Mizzou ROARS Spring Awards Show, for his strength in overcoming adversity during his life, and for his drive to fight through injuries in his short time at Mizzou ... Initially signed with Florida State out of junior college, but ended up a Tiger after a numbers game left him out of the picture at FSU ... Chose Mizzou in the summer of 2008 after a heated recruiting battle once he became available, and joined the team for summer workouts.

Was limited by various nagging injuries, but showed in spurts that he had the ability to be an impact player at defensive end ... Injured his foot during summer workouts, an injury which kept him less than full strength for much of the first half of the season ... Played in 12 games in all, recording 29 tackles, including a career-best 9 stops overall in Mizzou's overtime win against Northwestern in the Alamo Bowl ... Saw his first playing time against SEMO, recording one tackle, which was a TFL ... Had 2 tackles against Nebraska and made 1 stop at Texas ... Made 5 tackles against Colorado, including 3 TFLs (for a loss of 25 yards) ... Recorded first career sack against the Buffaloes ... One of his stops against CU was a huge play to start the game, when he tackled the Buffalo punter after a muffed snap that gave Mizzou superb field position to start the game ... Had 6 stops against Baylor, including 1.5 sacks (for a loss of 12 yards) against BU ... Made 1 tackle against Kansas State ... Had 3 tackles against Kansas.

Recorded 50 tackles and notched 13 quarterback sacks at Pearl River Community College as a sophomore ... Was voted team MVP and also earned 1st-Team All-State and All-Region honors in his sophomore season ... As a freshman, had 11 sacks and was a 2nd-Team All-Region pick ... Was ranked as the No. 2 defensive end junior college prospect by one outlet, and had over 30 division I scholarship offers come his way.

Lists the family atmosphere as one of the biggest draws that brought him to Mizzou ... Lists many names as those who he considers parent figures, including Mitch Jackson, Barry Glenn, Rose Jackson, Mary Jo Coulter, and Liz Merity.
