Dixon was one of 65 finalists nationwide.
Dec. 19, 2011
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced its candidates for the 2012 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award and Mizzou's Michael Dixon, Jr., was one of 65 finalists named to the watch list. The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in college basketball this season.
Dixon is off to a great start in 2011-12 under the direction of first-year head coach Frank Haith. The junior guard is averaging 12.6 points per game as the Tigers' sixth man while averaging 3.2 assists per contests with a team-leading 25 steals and a 2.05 assist-to-turnover ratio. Dixon is coming off of a career week that saw him average 24 points on 69.2-percent shooting in wins over Kennesaw State and William & Mary. That stretch includes Sunday's game in which he netted a career-best 30 points on 13-of-19 shooting. In all, he scored 48 points in 53 minutes last week.
Another key part of Dixon's game has been his ability to knock down free throws. In fact, he has missed just two foul shots all year, connecting on 40-of-42. He is first in Mizzou history in career field goal percentage with his 85.9-percent clip.
This original list of candidates will be narrowed down to a final twenty by January 1st, final ten by February 1st, and final five by March 1st. A premier Selection Committee will be appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the final five candidates in contention for the nation's top collegiate point guard award. These Hall of Fame committees are made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, Sports Information Directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame's Class Announcement on Championship Monday in New Orleans as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
Previous winners of the Bob Cousy Award have included Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph's), Raymond Felton (North Carolina), Dee Brown (Illinois), Acie Law (Texas A & M), DJ Augustin (Texas), Ty Lawson (North Carolina), Greivis Vasquez (Maryland) and last year's recipient Kemba Walker (Connecticut).
