Big 12 Conference Releases 2006-07 Preseason Basketball Coaches Poll

Oct. 16, 2006

Dallas, Texas - While preseason publications have consistently picked the University of Missouri Men's Basketball team to finish near the bottom of the Big 12 Conference standings, the league coaches have shown a little more respect to first year head coach Mike Anderson and the Tigers, predicting Mizzou to finish eighth in the 2006-07 Big 12 Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, released Monday (Oct. 16) by the Big 12 Conference office.

It's the second consecutive season the Tigers have been slotted in the eighth-position by the Big 12 Coaches. Last season Mizzou was picked eighth, but finished 11th overall following a 5-11 mark in Big 12 play.

The University of Kansas, which welcomes back all five starters from last season's 25-8 club, was the unanimous choice to win the Big 12 crown. The Jayhawks received 11 first-place votes. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own clubs. As a result, Texas A&M received the final first-place vote and was picked second in the poll, followed by Oklahoma State and Texas.

Anderson welcomes back eight letterwinners and two starters from last season's 12-16 club. The Tigers return starters Jason Horton and Marshall Brown and have added seven newcomers, including freshmen Keon Lawrence (Newark, N.J.) and J.T. Tiller (Marietta, Ga.) junior college transfers Darryl Butterfield (Miami, Fla.), Stefhon Hannah (Chicago, Ill.) and Vaidotas Volkus (Panevezys, Lithuania) and four-year transfers Michael Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.) and DeMarre Carroll (Birmingham, Ala.). Due to NCAA transfer rules, Carroll will sit out the 2006-07 season as a redshirt. Anderson received a hardship from the NCAA and will be eligible immediately.

While practice for the 2006-07 season opened on Oct. 13 at Mizzou Madness, fans will be able to get another early look at this season's club at the annual Black and Gold Game on Oct. 27 at Mizzou Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. and tickets to the event are just $5, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the Boys and Girls Club and Coaches vs. Cancer.
