Kleiza's Game-Winner Lifts Lithuania To Olympic Win
Aug. 10, 2008
Beijing, China -
Beijing, China - Former Tiger Linas Kleiza scored a team-high 13 points and drilled the game-winning three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left to lift Lithuania to a 79-75 win over defending Olympic champion Argentina.
The contest was tied 75-75 with the clock winding down before Kleiza, now a forward for the NBA's Denver Nuggets, hit the off-balance triple, his third of the contest.
"You know, we just played against the reigning Olympic champion," Kleiza said. "They know how to play, they've got a veteran team. They got into our lead, but we were able to hold it, and win a game."
Lithuania enjoyed a 12-point advantage late in the contest, before San Antonio Spur superstar Manu Ginobili led a furious comeback to even the game at 75-75. Ginobili scored a game-high 19 points for Argentina.
"It's definitely important [to do well in pool play]," Kleiza said. "You look at the other division, with Spain and the United States are pretty much fighting it out for No. 1 [in the other pool]. If you're fourth [in the pool], it could be one-and-done [in the medal round]. We're Just trying to get high as possible."
Kleiza and Lithuania return to action on Aug. 11 vs. Iran.
