Former Missouri Tiger Jordan Clarkson continues to shine as a rookie for the Los Angeles Lakers. The second round draft selection scored a team-leading 19 points and provided the highlight of the night, tipping home a Julius Randle (Kentucky) miss just before the overtime buzzer, to lift LA to an 89-88 win over Golden State Monday night in the 2014 NBA Las Vegas Summer League.
Clarkson's game-winner snapped Golden State's Summer League winning streak at 16 games and handed new head coach Steve Kerr his first Summer League defeat.
"I think Clarkson has great explosiveness going to the basket. He has a tremendous pull-up jumper," Lakers' Associate Head Coach Mark Madsen told ESPN LA. "But the thing about Jordan Clarkson is he's always at the right place at the right time. And we saw that on the tip-in.
"With 0.5 seconds left, he was there. He tipped it in. It was a soft-touch tip-in, and that got us the win."
The San Antonio native was more than just his scoring on Monday. The guard tied for the team lead with seven rebounds and played a game-high 33 minutes.
"I'm really just playing my game," Clarkson told ESPN LA. "Just being comfortable with myself, getting to know my teammates and just learning to play with them. I feel like we got room to grow and it's just going to keep getting better."
Clarkson is leading the Lakers (1-2) through three games this summer averaging 18.7 points on 44 percent shooting from the floor and 50 percent shooting from three-point range. He is also a perfect 9-of-9 from the foul line to go with 4.3 rebounds per contest.
Clarkson's top scoring game (21 points) game in the summer league opener vs. Toronto. He also scored a team-leading 16 points vs. New Orleans and has paced Los Angeles in scoring each game thus far.
