New Season Begins As Tigers Chase Big 12 Tournament Title...

> After a record-setting regular season, the #5/#5 Missouri Tigers (27-4 overall, 14-4 in Big 12 Conference play) look to attack the next stage of the season, and they'll be gunning for a Big 12 Tournament Championship in the friendly environs of Kansas City, Mo., where the tournament will be held from March 7-10 at the Sprint Center...

> Mizzou, with a school-record 27 regular-season wins in its back pocket, must wait to see who it plays in Thursday's quarterfinals at 6 p.m. (March 8th). The foe will be either #7-seed Oklahoma State (14-17 overall, 7-11 in Big 12 play) or #10-seed Texas Tech (8-22, 1-17), who play a first-round matchup Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. Mizzou swept the Red Raiders during the season, including an 81-59 win in Lubbock on Saturday which was preceded by a 63-50 win in Columbia on Jan. 28th. Oklahoma State is one of only three teams to beat Mizzou on the year, as the Cowboys knocked off then #2-ranked Mizzou, 79-72 in Stillwater, Okla., on Jan. 25th, before the Tigers exacted revenge with an 83-65 pasting in the Feb. 15th return game at Mizzou Arena...

> The Tigers come into the Big 12 Tournament having won two straight games, including a 78-72 home win over Iowa State on Feb. 29th, followed by Saturday's win at Tech. Prior to that, MU suffered its only losing streak of the season, when it fell in consecutive games to Kansas State (L, 78-68 in Columbia on Feb. 21st) and Kansas (L, 87-86 in OT in Lawrence on Feb. 25th)...

Mizzou Breaks Regular-Season Wins Record...

> It's already been a memorable season for the Missouri Tigers, who have equaled the program's best finish in the Big 12 standings since the conference began play in 1996-97. The only other season in which Mizzou finished 2nd in the Big 12 was 1998-99, when Norm Stewart's last Tiger team went 11-5 in league play (20-9 overall) and tied for 2nd...

> With Saturday's win in Lubbock, MU established a new record for most wins in the regular season, with #27. The 2008-09 team (on which current Tiger seniors Marcus Denmon, Kim English, Steve Moore and Jarrett Sutton were freshmen), ended with a school-record 31 overall wins and an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament...

It's Been A Season of Accomplishments...

> There's eyes on a bigger prize than just having a great regular season for these Tigers, but it would be a shame to not take a step back and recognize just what this team has accomplished to this point. Here's a small sampling of the historic nature of the 2011-12 season, and this team's achievements to date:

  • Record # of Regular-Season Wins: 27...
  • Record # of Big 12 Wins: 14...
  • Tied Record for Best Big 12 Finish: 2nd...
  • Rivalry Wins over Kansas, Illinois...
  • Highest AP Ranking Since 2001-02: #2...
  • CBE Classic Champions...
  • 1st Undefeated Non-Conference Reguar Season Since 1972-73...
  • 1st Road Win at Top-10 Opponent Since 1994: at #3 Baylor...
  • Most wins by a senior class in 4-year period: 104...
  • Kansas City, Here We Come...

    > Mizzou Basketball has a proud history of post-season success in Kansas City, as the Tigers have claimed 7 tournament titles there since the old Big Eight instituted the tradition in 1977...

    > Legendary former Tiger Coach Norm Stewart cut the nets down 6 of those times, claiming titles in 1978, 1982, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993 - all coming in Kansas City at Kemper Arena. Former Coach Mike Anderson joined in on the tradition as he guided his 2009 squad to its only Big 12 Tournament title to date, in Oklahoma City...

    > Mizzou is receiving a first-round bye in the Big 12 Tourney for only the 3rd time since the tournament began in 1997, and MU will look to equal the school's only Big 12 Tourney title which came in 2009 in Oklahoma City, when the current group of seniors were freshmen as MU went on a three-game run as the #3 seed. The only other first-round bye for MU came in 1999, when Coach Norm Stewart's last-ever Tiger team was upset in its first game as the #2 seed, by #7 Kansas State, 84-74 at Kemper Arena...

    > If the Tigers can win their first game on Thursday, history is on their side, as Mizzou is a perfect 3-0 alltime in Big 12 Tournament semifinal games, winning in 1997 (Oklahoma), 2003 (Oklahoma State) and 2009 (Oklahoma State). Mizzou is the only Big 12 school to have never lost a Big 12 Tournament semifinal contest...

    > On the flip side, history has not been on Mizzou's side related to Thursday, as the Tigers are just 3-8 alltime in Big 12 Quarterfinal play. However, on the flip side, MU's opponent in Thursday's Quarterfinal will be either Oklahoma State or Texas Tech. And Mizzou is a combined 5-0 in the Big 12 Tournament alltime against both schools...

High Seed a Precursor for Success in KC?...

    > This marks just the third time since the formation of the Big 12 Conference in 1996-97 that Mizzou has garnered a top-3 seed in the Big 12 Tournament. It's been feast or famine for the Tigers in their two previous instances. As noted previously, the only other time Mizzou has had a #2 seed in the Big 12 Tournament was in 1999, and that didn't turn out so well for Norm Stewart's Tigers, as #7-seeded Kansas State upset MU 84-74 in Kemper Arena to bounce them from the tournament at 0-1...

    > Mizzou's other top-3 seeding came in the aforementioned 2009 tournament in Oklahoma City, when the Tigers blitzed through #6 Texas Tech (81-60), #7 Oklahoma State (67-59) and #9 Baylor (73-60) to win its only Big 12 title to date...

    > Overall, the importance of coming into the tournament with a high seed can't be overlooked, as every one of the previous 15 Big 12 Tournament champions have either come from the #1, #2 or #3 seed - meaning that no team seeded #4 or below has ever won the title...

    Mizzou at the Sprint Center...

    > Since opening in the fall of 2007, the Sprint Center has hosted Mizzou 9 times previously for men's basketball games, and the Tigers have posted a 4-5 record alltime there. The Tigers lost 4 of their first 5 appearances in the building, but have since turned that around, winning 3 of their last 4 overall...

    > However, Mizzou hasn't fared so well at the Sprint Center as part of Big 12 Tournament action, as the Tigers are just 1-3 there, getting bounced in the 1st round twice by Nebraska (2008, 2010) and going 1-1 in 2011 (winning over Texas Tech, losing to Texas A&M)...

    > Historically speaking, Mizzou has had trouble shooting the ball in Big 12 Tournament action in the Sprint Center. In its 4 Big 12 Tourney games at Sprint, Mizzou is a combined 36.9% from the floor (87-of-236), and it has also been outrebounded by an average margin of 10.3 per game (minus 41 in 4 games)...

    > Conversely, the Tigers have made an impressive 82.4% of their free throws in Big 12 Tournament play at the Sprint Center, connecting on 75-of-91 freebies coming into this year's action...
