Jan. 6, 2011
Columbia, Mo. - Missouri junior guard Marcus Denmon was named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 30 list on Thursday afternoon as announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
The midseason list was selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board and is comprised of 30 student-athletes who, based on their performances in November and December, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor.
Denmon is off to a spectacular start for Mizzou as he is averaging 17.2 points and 4.0 rebounds for the 14-1 Tigers. The Kansas City, Mo., native is shooting an incredible 50.6 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three-point range and has been one of the country's most efficient scorers through 15 games, averaging 1.3 points per field goal attempt, while ranking among national leaders with his 87-percent free throw shooting.
The leading scorer on the nation's eighth-ranked club, Denmon has reached double figures in 12 consecutive games, including eight games with 18 or more points. He scored a career high 27 points vs. #13 Georgetown in Kansas City, 21 vs. #22 Vanderbilt and 15 vs. #20 Illinois. He recently poured in 22 points in a resounding 81-58 win over Old Dominion as the Tigers moved back inside the Top 10 of the national polls.
Transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are eligible for this midseason list but did not appear on the preseason Top 50. All players nationally who excel throughout the season will be evaluated and considered for the official voting ballot released in March.
Denmon is one of six Big 12 players to make the midseason list. Other league players include Alec Burks from Colorado, Jake Pullen From Kansas State, Marcus Morris from Kansas, Jordan Hamilton from Texas and LaceDarius Dunn from Baylor.
The 35th annual Wooden Award ceremony, which will include the announcement of the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winners, a special tribute to Coach Wooden and Wooden Award founder Duke Llewellyn, and the presentation of the Wooden Award All American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, will take place the weekend of April 8-10, 2011.
Denmon and the Tigers return to action on Saturday at Colorado. Game time is slated for 12:47 p.m. CT.
