Phil Pressey leads the Big 12 in assists, steals and assists-turnover ratio while averaging 9.4 ppg.
Jan. 4, 2012
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced its candidates for the 2012 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award and Mizzou's Phil Pressey was one of 20 finalists announced. The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guard in college basketball this season.
Pressey has arguably been the Big 12's top point guard all season long as he and Baylor's Pierre Jackson are the only two Big 12 student-athletes to appear on the list of 20. The Tiger sophomore is averaging a Big 12-best 6.1 assists per game while leading the league in assist-turnover ratio at 2.93. Not only that, but Pressey is active on the defensive end as he leads the Big 12 in steals with 30, averaging a league-high 2.14 per game. He is also averaging 9.4 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
The Dallas, Texas, native has also set a school record already this season as he has posted nine straight games with at least five assists, most recently with seven against Oklahoma in the Tigers' Big 12-opening win over the Sooners on Tuesday. The record was held by former Tiger and NBA standout Anthony Peeler, who had seven straight games with at least five assists in 1989-90.
This list of finalists will be narrowed down to a final 10 by February 1st, and final five by March 1st. A premier Selection Committee will be appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the final five candidates in contention for the nation's top collegiate point guard award. These Hall of Fame committees are made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, Sports Information Directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame's Class Announcement on Championship Monday in New Orleans as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
Not to be omitted, Tiger junior Michael Dixon, Jr., was one of the 60 original student-athletes to appear on the Cousy Award Watch List, released last month, which gives the Tigers one of the best 1-2 punches at the point guard position in America.
Previous winners of the Bob Cousy Award have included Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph's), Raymond Felton (North Carolina), Dee Brown (Illinois), Acie Law (Texas A & M), DJ Augustin (Texas), Ty Lawson (North Carolina), Greivis Vasquez (Maryland) and last year's recipient Kemba Walker (Connecticut).
