Post Game Coach and Player Quotes
Missouri Head Coach Mike Anderson
On what Mizzou needs to work on…
“Defense, there’s no question about it… defense and toughness more than anything else…. we need to establish it… taking advantage of what we have. We have some skill guys. You’ve got to have an inside presence, no question about it. Once we established that it allowed us to make some jump shots. A few guys had some uncontested shots.”
On how Mizzou is looking at the Illinois loss and ahead at their schedule…
“I’ve said all along, we’ve got some tests as we go. Illinois was a test for us to see where we are as a team. And we didn’t perform well. So now it just means we have a few games before the conference play. Every game is an important game for our basketball team. We can’t overlook anyone. I think that had something to do with the Illinois game. We are not as good as we think. We’ve just got to continue to work and get better. We’ve got a road test at Georgia; that will tell us some about ourselves before Big 12 play.”
Freshman Forward Laurence Bowers
On his performance and the impact of Missouri’s freshmen tonight…
“I just tried to fit in, I wasn’t trying to make too much happen. I got the one turnover, but that was because I already had in my mind what I was going to do. I think that was a good experience for all of us (freshmen) to be out there on the court together, instead of mixing the line-up with the seniors and juniors…. We are the future.”
On his play on Saturday…
“I'll have to look at the tape with Coach, but I think all of us are feeling more comfortable with each game. We have an idea of what we are needing to do and we are playing that instinctive basketball he talks about."
Senior Forward DeMarre Carroll
On coming off the Illinois loss and the importance of today’s win…
“We had that bitter taste in our mouths. We just lost our big Braggin’ Rights game. We were just looking to pick up a win. Today we came out doing the things we had to do. And Coach (Anderson) told us, this team right here, we can’t afford to look at their jerseys. We need to just come out here tonight and play with intensity. I think tonight is a new beginning for us.”
On the play of the team's bench…
“We need those guys, but it all starts with us seniors. We need to show them the way. We need to play with intensity from the start and that allows them to step in as that second wave and take the game over. They played great today and they played with a lot of energy and that's what we needed for sure."
