COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Missouri fought through the rust of a nine-day layoff Tuesday to beat the University of Missouri-Kansas City 60-42.
Thomas Gardner led the Tigers with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, a game that was anything but pretty.
Missouri (2-1) committed 20 turnovers and the Kangaroos had 14. The teams combined for 13 assists in the game, and neither team hit double digits until more than 12 minutes were gone in the first half.
UMKC (2-1) shot 24 percent from the field, including 13 percent from behind the arc, while Missouri was slightly better at 32 percent. Both teams had entered the game shooting 48 percent.
Dee Ayuba paced the Kangaroos with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Quinton Day, who was averaging 27.5 points going into the game, finished with seven points on 2-for-14 shooting.
Missouri hit double digits with 7:41 left in the first half on a Leo Lyons free throw that gave the Tigers a 10-9 lead. Missouri led at halftime 24-15.
UMKC didn't score for the first five minutes of the game, and had as many turnovers as points with eight minutes left in the half.
The win boosts Missouri's record to 15-0 all-time against Mid-Continent Conference opponents.
