Missouri vs. Missouri Southern Game Notes
Nov. 8, 2005
Missouri vs. Missouri Southern (Exhibition) Norm Stewart Court at Mizzou Arena - Columbia, Mo. November 8, 2005
Game Notes This game marked the first-ever meeting between Missouri and Missouri Southern on the hardwood. Missouri Team Notes The Tigers' 26-point win bests their average 26.3 points per game margin of victory in exhibition games in the Quin Snyder era. Mizzou held their second consecutive opponent to under 30 percent shooting from 3-point distance, limiting Missouri Southern to a 26.7 percent efficiency rate. The Tigers finished their exhibition schedule holding their opponents to an average of 23.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Tigers scored the games first seven points over a span of 1:32, to take a 7-0 lead into Missouri Southern's first timeout, at the 18:28 mark of the first half. The Tigers would stretch that run to 23-5 over 8:00 to open the game. After pulling down just eight offensive rebounds against Bemidji State, the Tigers exploded on the offensive glass vs. Missouri Southern, hauling in 23 of their 59 rebounds on the offensive end. Those offensive rebounds led to 22 second-chance points for Mizzou. Four Tigers - senior guard Jimmy McKinney (15), junior guard Thomas Gardner (19), sophomore forward Marshall Brown (19) and freshman forward Leo Lyons (11) - scored in double figures for the second straight outing. After going on four runs of 14 points or more against Bemidji State, the Tigers had two runs of that magnitude vs. Missouri Southern - a 23-5 run to open the game and a 24-10 run that carried over from the first half to the second.
Mizzou jumped out to its largest lead of the game, 31 points, at the 18:10 mark of the second half on a pair of free throws by freshman forward Leo Lyons.
The Tigers turned 12 first-half Missouri Southern turnovers into 18 points in the opening stanza. Eleven Mizzou players saw action in the first half, and nine of them pulled down at least one rebound. After allowing 33 first-half points to Bemidji State, the Tigers nearly cut that number in half by limiting Missouri Southern to only 19 points in the opening frame. Missouri Player Notes Sophomore forward Marshall Brown scored 10 of Mizzou's first 16 points, on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 shooting from the line, en route to a 19 point night. Sophomore forward Marshall Brown started the game 6-of-7 from the field, including 1-of-1 from beyond the arc, and 2-of-2 from the line for Mizzou. Had this not been an exhibition game, junior guard Thomas Gardner's 19-point, 10-rebound effort would have been his second career double-double. Had this not been an exhibition game, sophomore forward Marshall Brown's 19 points would have constituted a new career high. He also eclipsed his career best of 12 points in the Tigers' first exhibition, scoring 14 against Bemidji State. Had this not been an exhibition game, sophomore forward Marshall Brown would have been only one rebound shy of his first career double-double. Had this not been an exhibition game, junior guard Thomas Gardner (10) and sophomore forward Marshall Brown (9) would have recorded their second and third career games with at least seven rebounds, respectively. Freshman forward Leo Lyons (7) also would have notched the first such game in his career if this had been a regular-season game. After hitting two 3-point field goals in the entire game with Bemidji State, junior guard Thomas Gardner hit two in the first 3:30 of play against the Lions.
Missouri Southern Team Notes The Lions went on an 17-5 run from 17:32 to 10:01 of the second half, a span of 7:31, that cut the Mizzou lead to 56-37. Missouri Southern cut the Mizzou lead to as little as 17, 62-45, in the second half. Missouri Southern held the Tigers without a field goal from the 18:45 mark to the 12:46 mark of the second half, a run that spanned 5:59 of playing time. Missouri Southern didn't connect on a field goal until the 16:08 mark of the first half, a span of 3:52 to open the game. They started the game 1-of-8 from the floor. The Lions were held without a field goal from the 14:00 mark to the 8:37 mark of the first half, a stretch of 5:23 playing time.
