Columbia, Mo. - Mizzou Gold Squad Grabs 63-61 Victory In Preseason Scrimmage Earnest Ross leads Gold Team with 24 points, game-winner
Earnest Ross scored a game-high 24 points, including the go-ahead layup with just 35 seconds remaining to lift Mizzou Gold to a 63-61 win in the Black & Gold Game Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena.
Ross and fellow Gold teammate, Jabari Brown (15 points), combined for 39 of their team's 63 points to earn the exciting two-point win. Brown also added four assists, while Ross contributed eight rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes.
"It was great to see those guys out there and get them playing in front of some fans," Head Coach Frank Haith said. "I thought we did some good things tonight, but also, like any team this time of year, we have areas of improvement. All in all it was a very beneficial night for us."
Jordan Clarkson led the Mizzou Black with 19 points. Seeing his first action since the 2012 Mizzou Madness scrimmage, Clarkson played 29 minutes and was adept at getting into the lane from his point guard position. The junior also played alongside freshman point guard Wes Clark, who led all performers with eight assists (compared to just two turnovers).
"Those young post players like Ryan and Johnathan did some great things for us tonight," Clarkson said. "Ryan is gaining confidence on the offensive end and Johnathan can make an impact in so many ways."
Keanau Post and Tony Criswell added an inside presence for the Gold, primarily in the second half. Post was allowed to play through foul trouble (whistled eight times in the scrimmage), but finished with eight points and six rebounds. Criswell, one of two seniors, scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, all in the final 15 minutes.
In fact the Gold bounced back in the paint in a big way in the final 15 minutes, out-rebounding the Black, 23-14, in the second half with 12 of those 23 rebounds coming on the offensive glass.
Missouri returns to action on Oct. 25 vs. Oklahoma City University. The 7 p.m. contest will be played at Hearnes Center. The game is free to the public and Mizzou will honor the 1993-94 Big Eight Championship squad during the game.
