COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Gold Team took a 3-1 lead in the Fall World Series with a 1-0 win over the Black Team on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23) at Taylor Stadium in game four of the series. The two teams combined for just seven hits in the game and an error by Black shortstop Eric Garcia in the bottom of the seventh sealed the win of the Gold Team. Mike McGraw scored the game-winning run on the play after hitting a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh.
Gold starter Dusty Ross pitched out of a jam in the first inning after allowing a pair of singles. With runners on second and third, he got Gavin Stark to fly out to right center and then he induced a fly out to center by Scott Sommerfeld to strand two men. Black starter Jeff Cline allowed a leadoff single to Dillon Everett in the bottom of the first, but catcher Jake Ivory gunned him down trying to steal second and Cline escaped the first inning.
Both pitchers settled in from there and kept the offense in check. Cline pitched three innings and gave up just three hits while striking out two while not walking a batter. Ross pitched five innings and allowed just three hits while striking out five batters.
Ryan Clubb came on in relief of Cline and threw three perfect innings with two strikeouts as he kept the Gold Team off the board. In fact, Clubb was perfect until giving up a one-out double to McGraw in the bottom of the seventh inning, and that was the end of his day as the Black Team brought in closer Ryan Yuengel to try and get out of the jam.
Drew Carlile was the first batter to face Yuengel and he laced a 2-2 pitch back up the middle, but Garcia, playing at short, fielded the ball just to the left side of second base and threw wide of first base, allowing McGraw to score from second, sealing the walk-off win of the Gold Team.
