Black Team Takes Opener of Fall World Series

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Game one of Mizzou's Fall World Series was won by the Black team in 10 innings. The game was forced to extra innings after a four-run bottom of the ninth inning by the Gold Team evened the score at six. The Black team responded in the 10th inning by plating six runs and held on for a 12-9 victory.

Trailing 6-2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Gold squad got an RBI single from freshman Kale Gaden, then a three-run home run by junior Russell LaFleur tied the game at six and sent the game to extra innings.

To speed up play, runners were placed on first and second base in the extra innings. The Black team plated a total of six runs in the top of the 10th. The first five batters to the plate for Black in the 10th inning reached safely, including RBI hits by sophomore Ben Turner, junior Jesse Santo and freshman Brannon Champagne. Junior Jonah Schmidt then connected on a two-run home run, his second homer of the game.

The Gold team managed to put three runs on the board in the bottom of the 10th inning to make it a 12-9 final margin.

Schmidt was 3-for-5 on the day with four RBI and two runs scored. He put the Black team on the board with a two-out double in the top of the first inning, then picked up his second RBI of the game with a solo home run in the top of the sixth, which gave the Black team a 4-2 advantage.

Junior Nick Tepesch struck out seven in five innings pitched, allowing two runs on four hits, while junior Tyler Clark started for Gold, allowing three runs on three hits in four innings of work. He stuck out three. Both starters took no decisions.

 

 

Freshman Blake Brown had three hits and freshman Dane Opel was 2-for-4 for the Black team. Junior Rex Meyr had a pair of hits for Gold and drove in two runs.

The 2009 Fall World Series continues on Tuesday, with game two starting at 6 p.m. at Taylor Stadium. All games of the series are open to the public free of charge.
