OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Mizzou baseball team saw five of its student-athletes honored as the Big 12 Conference announced its 2012 All-Big 12 teams on Tuesday (May 22) in Oklahoma City. Senior reliever Dusty Ross (Iowa Park, Texas) was named to the All-Big 12 second team while Dane Opel (Edwardsville, Ill.), Blake Brown (Normal, Ill.), Ben Turner (St. Charles, Mo.) and Rob Zastryzny (Corpus Christi, Texas) were all named to the All-Big 12 honorable team.
Ross was arguably the Tigers' top arm out of the bullpen this season as he accumulated a 2.55 ERA in 42.1 innings pitched while boasting 21 strikeouts. His numbers were even better in league play as he compiled a 1.74 ERA with two wins and two saves while allowing just four earned runs in 20.2 innings pitched in Big 12 games. He struck out 13 batters in league play as well and allowed just 19 hits in 12 appearances, spanning 20.2 innings.
Opel finished the season tied for the Big 12 lead in home runs with 11 while batting .285 with a .536 slugging percentage and a .375 OBP, good for a .911 OPS. He led the Tigers in RBI (39) and scored 32 runs while leading the club in slugging, homers, extra-base hits and OPS. Opel was named Big 12 Player of the Week following the Tigers' season-opening series at Auburn. Brown put up equally as impressive numbers, slugging nine homers while hitting .296 on the season with a team-best 44 runs scored and 36 RBI, which was second on the team to only Opel. He also drew 20 walks and stole a team-best 14 bags in 2012. In league play, he hit .300 with 13 RBI, 18 runs scored and a team-best nine extra-base hits.
Turner was one of the Big 12's best catchers all season long, hitting .279 with 33 runs, 23 RBI and 12 extra-base hits, including the only home run of his career, all while catching nearly 92-percent of the innings thrown by Tiger pitchers this season. His numbers were even better in league play as he hit .293 with 11 RBI and 13 runs scored while catching every inning in league play, handling a Tiger pitching staff that posted a league ERA of 3.94. He committed just two errors all season long.
Zastryzny was once again the Tigers' Friday night starter in his sophomore season and again did not disappoint. In fact, he led the team in innings pitched (90.1), strikeouts (66) while leading all Tiger starters with a 3.99 ERA. In eight Big 12 Friday starts, he compiled a 3.02 ERA (third on the team in league play) while striking out 39 against just 19 walks in 59.2 innings pitched. He was also recognized as the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week after throwing a complete game, shutout at Texas Tech earlier this season.
Mizzou will open action at the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday night (May 23) against third-seeded Texas at 7:30 p.m. For all the latest on Mizzou baseball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on twitter @MUTigerBaseball.
