Mizzou junior Max Scherzer has been named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, for his performance in the Tigers' win over No. 1 Florida last Friday in Gainesville, Fla. Scherzer allowed just one run on only three hits in seven innings on the mound against the top ranked Gators to record his second win in as many starts this season.

Scherzer faced the minimum through the first three innings on Friday and struck out seven of the first 12 batters he faced. He finished with eight strikeouts on the night and earned a spot on the Pepsi Baseball Classic All-Tournament Team.

Missouri defeated No. 1 Florida, 14-5, knocking off a No. 1 team for the first time since an 8-0 win over Texas on May 1, 2004.

This is the third career Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor of Scherzer, who was the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2005. He is 2-0 on the season with a 1.38 ERA and has 14 strikeouts in 13.0 innings pitched.

Mizzou (5-4) will take on Illinois State at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the 2006 home opener at Taylor Stadium. Scherzer is scheduled to be back on the mound on Friday night, when the Tigers open up a three-game series with Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 6:30 p.m. at Taylor Stadium.
