COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Gold Team took a 2-0 advantage at the Mizzou Fall World Series after pulling out a 6-3 victory over the Black Team on Wednesday. Game three of the series will be held this Saturday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. CT.
After a scoreless inning and a half, the Black Team jumped ahead with a run in the bottom of the second inning to go up 1-0. Gavin Stark led off the inning with a line drive base hit into left field for the team’s first hit of the game. He moved into scoring position on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt, allowing Stark to advance to second. After taking third on a groundout to the right side of the infield, Stark touched home on a base hit by Scott Sommerfeld, who blooped a single in front of the left fielder to plate the game’s first run.
Gold answered back in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of a costly fielding error while putting three runs on the board to take the lead. After a one out walk to Blake Brown, Dillon Everett put a pair of runners on with a base hit into left field. Conner Mach then hit a grounder to third base, which ricocheted off the fielder into left field, bringing Brown in to score while letting Everett and Mach move into scoring position. Ben Turner put Gold ahead by grounding out to second, scoring Everett, while Andreas Plackis followed with single back up the middle, driving in Mach to make it 3-1.
The Gold Team’s third error of the game helped Black get a run back in the bottom of the third, cutting Gold’s lead to 3-2. Brannon Champagne reached on a one out error and moved up to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run with Eric Garcia at the plate. Champagne came in and scored on Stark’s sacrifice fly.
A pair of two out runs in the top of the fourth helped the Gold team extend their lead to 5-2. Brown got things going with his second walk of the game and stole second to get into scoring position. Everett then blasted a triple into deep right-center field, bringing Brown in to score. On the play, the Gold shortstop overthrew the third baseman as they tried to get Everett out at third with the ball sailing into the dugout, allowing Everett to touch home.
The Gold squad cushioned their lead with another two out run in the top of the fifth, making it 6-2. With a runner on first, Drew Carlile singled through the left side to put runners on the corners, setting up a single by C.J. Jarvis to score the run.
The Black Team was able to get that run back in the bottom half of the frame on a leadoff triple by Eric Garcia, who came in to score on a passed ball, cutting Gold’s lead to 6-3. That’d be the last time Black would score, as Brett Graves came in for the last two innings to shut them down and record the save.
