COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Iowa State used 10 extra-base hits to down the University of Missouri baseball team 12-5 Friday night in the first game of a three-game Big 12 Conference series at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field.
The Cyclones hit six doubles, two each by Joe Urban and Brent Koen, and four home runs as they had a total of 13 hits in the victory.
Missouri took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out single by Mick Weiss. Weiss' single scored Jon Williams who walked earlier in the inning. However, it would be a long time before Missouri scored again as Iowa State scored the game's next 12 runs.
Iowa State scored four times in the top half of the fourth inning. ISU got back-to-back doubles by Rob Conway and Brandon Cashman to open the inning. A single by Joe Urban made it 2-0 before Brent Koen homered to right-center field to give the Cyclones a 4-1 lead.
After a 72-minute rain delay, T.J. Bohn homered to left field to make it 5-1 in the fifth inning.
ISU scored five runs in the sixth inning as Bohn hit a grand slam. The Cyclones eventually took a 12-1 lead in the eighth inning. Missouri got a home run by Mick Weiss, his sixth of the season, to make it 12-2. Wes Fewell singled and stole second base before Luke Cassis had a run-scoring single to right field.
MU scored two runs in the ninth inning. Lee Laskowski doubled to open the frame before Ryan Stegall singled to make it 12-4. Stegall scored to make it 12-5 when W.T. Hoover reached on an error.
Weiss, Fewell and Laskowski each had two hits for the Tigers.
(3-3) suffered the loss for Missouri. Charly Bigwood (2-5) picked up the win for ISU.
Missouri falls 23-17-1 overall and 8-14 in the Big 12. Iowa State improves to 16-19-1 overall and 7-8 in league play. Game two of the series will be Saturday at 4 p.m.
