Mizzou Tops Toledo in Opener of Sunday Doubleheader

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- - Missouri defeated Toledo, 3-1, in the opener of Sunday's doubleheader at Taylor Stadium. For the third-straight game, the Tigers' starting pitcher recorded a career-high in strikeouts, as sophomore Kyle Gibson struck out 11 and allowed just one run on four hits in eight innings on the mound. He improved to 4-0 on the season.

Gibson retired 14 out of 15 batters between the third and seventh innings, including retiring the side in order in the third, fifth and sixth innings. He struck out the side in order in the fifth inning.

Senior Greg Folgia extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single to lead off the game. He then tripled in the third inning, driving in freshman Andrew Thigpen with the game's first run. Folgia scored later in the third on a single by sophomore Trevor Coleman.

Coleman had two hits in the game, as did Thigpen who was 2-for-3 with a run scored in his first collegiate action.

Junior Kyle Mach hit his first home run of the season and the fourth of his career, connecting on a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 4-0 lead for the Tigers.

Toledo scored its first run of the series in the top of the seventh inning, snapping a string of 26 scoreless innings by Mizzou pitchers.

Freshman Nick Tepesch picked up his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
