Freshman Kaitlyn Fischer led the way for the women in their dual against Arkansas earlier this month
Sept. 26, 2013
Columbia, Mo. - The Tigers will hit the road for the second time this season with a trip up to Minneapolis, MN, for the 28th annual Roy Griak Invitational at the Les Bolstad Golf Course. One of the more prestigious early-season meets in the nation, the field will boast seven nationally ranked programs on the men's side, and nine on the women's. This weekend will also serve as the first regional competition for the teams this season, with nine fellow-Midwest Regional teams hitting the line on Saturday.
The men will start the day off for the Tigers at 12:20 p.m. CST with their first 8k of the year. Among the 16 athletes lacing up for the black and gold are the four of the five scorers from the Arkansas Dual earlier this month: sophomore Evan Chiplock, sophomore Tyler Schneider, senior Hayden Legg, and sophomore Kenny Cushing.
Lining up against the Mizzou men are three of the top 30 ranked teams in the nation, as released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Topping this list is current No. 4 BYU, followed by No. 24 NC State, No. 29 Arizona State, and Michigan State (RV). Mizzou has received votes in the past three national polls, along with fellow-SEC contender Georgia, who will also hit the course at Roy Griak.
Missouri will also get a taste of Midwest competition as fellow-regional ranked teams Minnesota, Iowa, Oklahoma, South Dakota State, and Illinois State are slated to race on Saturday.
The women will get their first taste of the 6k distance this season at 1:10 p.m. CST and, like the men, will toe the line against some of the top national and regional ranked teams. On the national level, seven of the top 30 ranked teams will toe the line on Saturday, including Arizona (No. 5), Michigan State (No. 12), Minnesota (No. 19), Vanderbilt (No. 20), NC State (No. 21), Iowa State (No. 26), and Butler (No. 29).
Donning the black and gold for the Mizzou ladies will be freshman Kaitlyn Fischer, who led the way for the Tigers at the Arkansas Dual, freshman Kaelyn Balch, sophomore Sam Garrett, junior Courtney Brown, and freshman Brooke Wolfe. All five were scorers at the Arkansas Dual, and will look to climb the Regional Rankings as they take on five of the ranked teams in the Midwest.
Highlighting that list is the region's current No. 1 ranked Minnesota and No. 2 Iowa. Other regional competition will include Illinois State (No. 8), South Dakota (No. 13), and Iowa (No. 15).
