COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou men's and women's cross country teams are preparing for the predicted rainy evening as they kick off the season at home. The Open is replacing the Missouri Cross Country Challenge that had been held in previous years with both collegiate and high school teams.

Columbia College and Missouri Valley College will join Mizzou on Friday, with the women's 5k starting at 6:30 p.m., and the men's 5k following at 7:00 p.m.  The races will be held on the A.L. Gustin Golf Course.

The men's race will feature returners Phil Bascio (Sr.), Tyler Compton (Jr.), Eric Dillon (So.), Blake Irwin (Sr.), Hayden Legg (Jr.), and Kenny Cushing, who was redshirted freshman year and is looking forward to his first full cross country season in uniform.  Phil Bascio will also be back in action for the Tigers after three years.  He found success last spring during track, having placed 8th in the 5000m at Tom Botts Invitational.

Hayden Legg was the 6th finisher on the difficult 8k course for the Mizzou men at last year's Cross Country Challenge.

For the women, Chelsea Chrisman (Jr.), Ali Ross (So.), Landon Wachter (So.), will race in the Tiger's uniform, along with Faith Sumney, Jasmine Webb, and Brianna Westervelt, who all redshirted their freshmen year.  Chelsea Chrisman was 7th for the women at last year's Cross Country Challenge, followed by Brianna Westervelt finished who 8th.

Stay tuned to MUTigers.com for a complete recap, and look to the Twitter feed MIZ_TrackField for updates throughout the evening.
