COLUMBIA, Mo. - Freshman Kaitie Vanatta (Littleton, Colo.) became the first Tiger freshman since 2002 to take home All-Big 12 honors as she placed 11th overall with a time of 21:48.31 at the 2009 Big 12 Championships, held Saturday (Oct. 31) at A.L. Gustin Golf Course. Vanatta is the Mizzou's first All-Big 12 honoree on the men's or women's side since 2006 and she joins former Tiger standout Valerie Lauver as the only two freshmen All-Big 12 honorees in school history on the women's side.

The men finished eighth overall at the championships with 237 total points, marking the first time in the last six seasons that Mizzou has not finished in the top half at the Big 12 Championships. Dan Quigley (St. Louis, Mo.) paced the men's field with a time of 25:51.87, placing 29th overall. The women - led by Vanatta - placed ninth overall with 212 points. Oklahoma State ran away with the men's team Big 12 Championship after earning the top four individual spots in the race while Texas Tech earned the Big 12 Championship on the women's side after totaling 38 points. The team titles are the second-straight for both programs.

Phillip King (Columbia, Mo.) and Michael Pandolfo (Lone Tree, Colo.) were the Tiger men's second and third finishers, respectively, turning in times of 26:04.48 and 26:07.28 in the 8K race. King and Pandolfo finished back-to-back at 42nd and 43rd overall. Max Storms (Kansas City, Mo.) was the Tigers' next finisher on the men's side, clocking in at 26:32.90, placing 58th overall. Tyler Compton (Buffalo, Mo.) rounded out the men's top five after placing 77th with a time of 27:11.57.

Aside from Vanatta, another Tiger freshman finished among the league's top 40 as freshman Bailey Belvis (Prosper, Texas) finished the 6K trek in 22:59.57, placing 40th overall. Senior Ellen Ries (Ryan, Iowa) was the women's third finisher after placing 46th overall with a time of 23:03.68.

Both Kinsey Farren (Dallas, Texas) and Laura Roxberg (Overland Park, Kan.) rounded out the Tigers' top five with times of 23:26.49 and 23:37.55, respectively.

The Tigers will return to action on Nov. 14 as they head to the NCAA Regional Championships. For all the latest on Mizzou cross country, stay tuned to www.MUTigers.com.
