FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - In its final tune-up before hosting the Big 12 Cross Country Championships, the Mizzou cross country team had a strong showing at the Chile Pepper Festival, hosted by Arkansas, on Saturday (Oct. 17). The women placed fourth out of 34 teams with 165 points while the men posted 223 points en-route to placing seventh of 29 teams.

Kaitie Vanatta (Littleton, Colo.) ran the 6K course in 21:18.78 to finish 11th overall and was the women's top finisher on the day. Freshman Bailey Belvis (Prosper, Texas) placed 16th overall with a time of 21:30.43, giving Mizzou a pair of top-20 finishers, both of whom are freshmen.

"Our team showed a great step in the right direction today," women's coach Rebecca Wilmes said. "Kaitie and Bailey did an outstanding job working together and their performances were especially impressive for two true freshmen. We will be right where we want to be in two weeks when we add Ellen Ries back into the mix."

Dan Quigley (St. Louis, Mo.) ran an 8K time of 31:04.29 to finish first amongst the Tiger men while Phillip King (Columbia, Mo.) placed 43rd overall with a time of 31:17.61.

"Our men showed great improvements today and that is encouraging as we head into the Big 12 meet," head coach Jared Wilmes said. "Dan and Phillip both showed that they are back in good health and ready for the championship competition. The performances today indicate that we are shaping up at the right time as we head into the Big 12 Championships and beyond."

Aimee Bonte (Fenton, Mo.) was the third finisher on the women's side after clocking in at 22:36.25, placing 61st overall while Emily Baker (Wildwood, Mo.) placed just behind Bonte in 65th at 22:39.98. Laura Roxberg (Overland Park, Kan.) rounded out the Tigers' top five with a 69th-place finish after running a time of 22:44.44.
