EUGENE, Ore. - Former Mizzou shot putter Christian Cantwell finished as the national runner-up at the USA Track and Field (USATF) Championships after throwing 21.87m (71-9), a season-best mark, on Sunday (June 26) at Hayward Field in Eugene. He finished second to Adam Nelson, who measured in at 22.09m (72-5 ¾). Cantwell's final throw was longer than that mark, but he just stepped out of the ring for a foul.

For Cantwell, the second-place finish at this year's USATF Championships goes along with his 2010 USATF Outdoor Championship and his four USATF Indoor Championships in the shot put as he has established himself as one of the world's most dominant athletes in any track and field event.

Cantwell took the lead in the first round with his throw of 21.87m (71-9) and he held that until the second round when Nelson tossed his event-winning mark. Nelson then fouled his final four attempts, leaving an opportunity for Cantwell, who just missed passing Nelson. Cantwell fouled three of his final five throws, including the sixth attempt which appeared to be longer than Nelson's event-winning mark.
