March 21, 2012
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou track and field program will open its 2012 outdoor season this weekend as it hosts the annual Missouri Relays at Audrey J. Walton Stadium on Friday and Saturday (March 23-24). The meet will begin on Friday at 11:30 with the women's hammer throw and conclude with the running of the 5,000m run at 6:30 p.m. The meet will resume Saturday at 10 a.m. and conclude at 4:45 p.m. with the 4x400m relay that day.
Mizzou is coming off of a strong indoor season and will look to carry success into the outdoor season. Three Tigers - Ricky West, Jacob Bullinger and Laura Roxberg - claimed Big 12 Indoor Championships and Roxberg even set a new school record in the mile run at 4:39.91, a record that had stood at Mizzou since 1984. Those three, along with a slew of returning veterans will lead the Tigers into the outdoor season.
Mizzou also turned in a pair of All-Americans during the indoor season as West was a first-team All-American in the 800m run, becoming the first Tiger since Derrick Peterson to take home first-team All-America honors in that event in 2000. Also, newcomer Malcolm Pennix took home second-team All-America honors in the men's long jump.
In all, the Tigers also claimed more than 30 All-Big 12 honors at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, obviously highlighted by the three Champions mentioned earlier. As always, the Missouri Relays will showcase some of the top college and high school talent from around the area as the meet will be a combined high school/collegiate meet.
