Peterson To Advance With Team USA To IAAF World Indoor Championships

Feb. 28, 2004

BOSTON - Missouri Tiger post-collegian and current volunteer assistant coach, Derrick Peterson, placed second Saturday in the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships to qualify as part of Team U.S.A. in the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics.

"The field was excellent for only six men," said Peterson. "I thought it was a good race, if I wanted to change the outcome, I would have won. Myself and Michael are fortunate enough to make it."

Peterson finished with a time of 1:48.67, a split-second off Michael Stember's winning time of 1:48.08. At Missouri, Peterson won two national titles in 1999 in the 800-meter run in both the indoor and outdoor seasons as part of his six all-American honors.

The IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics will be held next weekend, March 5-7, in Budapest, Hungary. For more information on the meet visit iaaf.org or mutigers.com.

Christian Cantwell will throw in the men's shot put competition tomorrow afternoon in day three of the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships at 3:05 p.m., central time. ESPN2 will have television coverage tonight starting at 5:30 p.m., and Sunday starting at 5:00 p.m.
