AMES, Iowa - Mizzou senior pole vaulter Brian Hancock (Monroe City, Mo.) has been named Big 12 Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday (Feb. 22). Hancock earns the weekly honor for the first time in his career and he is the first Tiger to take home Big 12 Athlete if the Week since Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) took home the honor on April 21 last season.

Hancock earns Big 12 Athlete of the Week accolades after resetting the Mizzou school record in the pole vault after clearing 5.38m (17-7 ¾) in the pole vault at the Tigers' last regular season indoor meet, the Mizzou Collegiate Challenge. That mark tops his previous school record, which he set back in 2009, and currently has him ranked first in the league heading into this weekend's Big 12 Championships.

The mark also likely qualifies Hancock, who is a three-time All-American, for the 2011 Indoor NCAA National Championships in March. He is currently ranked ninth in the nation with his mark.

Hancock and the Tigers will be back in action this weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lincoln, Neb. For all the latest on Mizzou track and field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
