Missouri Hosts Star-Studded Field With Tiger Classic Friday

Jan. 28, 2004

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri track and field teams will host the Tiger Classic on Friday. Nebraska, Wichita State, and Indiana will be the Tigers' guests in the four-team meet. Competition begins with field events at 4 p.m. running events starting at 6 p.m.

Big Teams Coming To Town
The competition for this meet should be intense as the three teams invited to the meet have records of being some of the best in their respective conferences. Nebraska's men and women are defending indoor champs of the Big 12 Conference, and have many that will challenge in each event. Indiana's women finished second in the Big Ten Conference's indoor championships in 2003. Wichita State's men took second in last year's Missouri Valley Conference indoor meet and won the outdoor MVC championship.

Cantwell and Peterson to Compete
To complete the stacked field, current Tiger staff members Christian Cantwell and Derrick Peterson are slated to compete along side the collegians in their respective events. Cantwell (Eldon, Mo.) currently has the longest indoor shot put throw in the world in 2004 after his throw of 68 feet, 3¾ inches in the Missouri Invitational, held two weeks ago. Derrick Peterson will be competing in one of the middle-distance races and has already qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials to be held in June.

Three Tigers Have NCAA Provisional Marks
The number of Missouri track and field athletes that have achieved NCAA provisional marks has moved to three after Amanda Bales (Bettendorf, Iowa) won last Friday's mile run in the MU-KU-KSU Triangular with a time of 4:48.76. Tiger shot putters Janae Strickland (Houston, Texas) and Conrad Woolsey (Excelsior Springs, Mo.) have provisional marks in their events as well.

Woolsey's throw of 60 feet, 3¾ inches in last weekend's triangular ranked number one currently in the Big 12.

Horn Jumps for Three Personal Bests
Junior Chris Horn (O'Fallon, Mo.) broke three personal bests last Friday in all three jumping events. Horn delivered a first place finish in the long jump event with a mark of 23 feet. Horn also finished second in the triple jump, and sixth in the high jump.

Close Calls
Senior Holly Scherder (Frankford, Mo.) set a personal best in the weight throw event by one centimeter last Friday, coming within four centimeters of her roommate, Ann Snider's, school record in the event set in the Missouri Invitational two weeks ago.

Junior Neville Miller (St. Louis, Mo.) won an exciting 800-meter race by only six hundredth of a second (1:53.38) beating out Christian Smith of Kansas State, who came in the race with the best time in the Big 12.

Local Sprinter Wins 400
Tiger junior Jason Jones, a former athlete at Columbia's Rock Bridge High School, won the 400-meter dash last Friday by nearly a second. Jones won his first event championship of his collegiate carrer.

First Road Trip of the Season Next For Tigers
For the first time this season, the Tigers will hit the road as a full-squad, traveling to the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational next weekend. Some Tigers will compete in the combined event portion of the competition on Friday, a full slate will await the Tigers on Saturday. The 21-team invitational will include Big 12 foes Nebraska, Kansas, and Kansas State and SEC powerhouse, Kentucky.
