Pole Vaulter Hancock Scores in First NCAA Meet

June 13, 2008

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Missouri sophomore Brian Hancock (Monroe City, Mo.) became the first male Tiger in 50 years to earn All-America honors in the pole vault Friday, tying for eighth place in the national final at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines. Hancock, participating in his first NCAA meet, cleared the opening height of 16 feet, 8¾ inches (5.10m) on his first attempt to secure a high placing.

Hancock is the first man from Mizzou since Bob Davis won the national title in 1958 (14-4) to garner All-America honors in the pole vault. Joe Webb did finish fourth in 1959, but All-America honors were only given to top three finishers at that time.

Hancock tied with UCLA frosh Johnny Quinn to split the one team point by virtue of both having equal jumping records. Some notable competitors that bowed out in qualifying Wednesday or early today included Kansas' Jordan Scott, Clemson's Mitch Greeley, Tennessee frosh Joseph Berry, and incoming national-leader Jason Colwick of Rice.

Tomorrow, the lone Tiger to compete in the event's final day will be senior Nate Englin in the men's shot put. That competition is scheduled to start at 3 p.m., central. CBS will air two hours of live coverage of tomorrow's action from 3-5 CST.

Despite Flooding, All is Well

Recent national reports out of Des Moines about the flooding of '08 have not been so pleasant. But, despite today's announcement of a voluntary evacuation of downtown Des Moines, the meet and all of the teams involved, have continued without much disruption. A handful of teams had to leave the Downtown Embassy Suites a few days ago for fear of rising waters, but most of teams, including Mizzou, is staying West Des Moines, far from any flood plain.

Drake Stadium is also located on high ground. One of the problems in the foreseeable future could be the progressive closing of roads between Des Moines and Missouri as southern Iowa has started to feel the effects.
