Throws, Relays Highlight Drake Finale
April 25, 2009
DES MOINES, Iowa. - On a day where there were plaque dedications and recognitions, Friday was the perfect day for a track meet. Unfortunately, much would be different on Saturday with the addition of adverse weather conditions in Des Moines, but the Tigers track team seemed to thrive on the final day of the Drake Relays with two individual championships and many solid performances. Krishna Lee, who had two fourth place finishes on Friday, did three spots better on Saturday morning, winning the women's hammer throw on her first toss of the day. The throw of 187 feet, 11 inches (57.28 meters) capped off a standout weekend for Lee as she earned her first Drake individual championship. Elisha Hunt also went on to finish third in the hammer throwing 183 feet, 4 inches (55.89 meters). Chris Rohr had double duty on Saturday, competing in both the men's discus and hammer throw and finished first in the hammer throw and sixth in the discus. Rohr's toss of more than 235 feet, 11 inches (71.92 meters) on his fifth throw in the hammer was good enough for top spot, while his throw of 173 feet, one inch (52.77 meters) placed him sixth. Once again, the throw by Rohr outdid his previous Big 12 leading hammer throw of 70.01 meters, and, for now, leads the country in the event. Kaela Rorvig was the top jumper in her flight of the women's long jump, and was one of Mizzou's highest finishers on the day, taking third place with a jump of 19 feet, 8 inches (5.99 meters). In the prelims of the women's shuttle hurdle relay, the team of Woolridge, Rorvig, Begany and Boldt took heat two, qualifying for the finals in 58.88 seconds, where later that afternoon, finished in second in 58.58 seconds behind Alabama. Although the SHR is not run at the Big 12 Championships, the 58.88 the team put up is one of the top 15 times in the country.
After finishing fourth in their heat, the men's 1600-meter sprint medley landed in the sixth spot overall as Ryan Blackwell, Jerron Forte, Chris Davis and Blake Irwin crossed the tape in 3:24.30. In the last race of the day for the Tigers, the men's distance medley relay team got a late charge by Tim Cornell in the final lap and finished fourth, clocking in at 9:45.26. Mizzou will hit the road again next week, heading back to Fayetteville for the Arkansas Twilight meet on Friday. |
