Track & Field Earns PR's on Day Two in California

April 18, 2014

WALNUT, Calif. - The Tigers continued into day two out in California on Thursday with the completion of the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon, and the start of the track events at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Highlighting the day's events was junior Morgan Whitson's fifth-place finish in her season's heptathlon at the California Invitational.  She closed out the two-day competition with a final point tally of 5,273, good for a personal record (PR) and the No. 10 spot on the Mizzou All-Time Top Ten list for the event.

Whitson earned an individual event PR to close out the competition, dropping her 800-meter time by nine seconds to run 2:22.42.  Whitson now moves into the national rankings for the multi-event contest, with her score good for the No. 23 spot on the current list.

Another highlight came from the evening's events on the track, where freshman Teylar Adelsberger made her second career appearance in the 3000-meter Steeplechase with a PR for eighth in the Mt. SAC Relays field.  Adelsberger's final time of 11:06.47 was within a second of moving her up into the All-Time Top Ten list in Mizzou history.

Events will continue at Mt. SAC Friday with more action from the mid-distance and distance athletes.  Another group will be featured in the schedule at Friday's Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.

A group of Tigers will also be competing closer to home this weekend, as a small group prepares to travel to Edwardsville, Ill., for SIUE's Gateway Invitational on Saturday.

Included in the roster for Saturday's Gateway Invitational are several members of the Missouri Record Books, including the most recent School Record Holder, senior Hailey Twietmeyer.  Twietmeyer took over the top spot in the history books for the javelin at last weekend's Missouri Relays after she won the event with a record toss of 51.17m (167-10).

She will be joined by fellow senior Sandra Hampton, who also appears in the Missouri Record Books at No .6 on the All-Time Top Ten list for the javelin.

On the men's side, another javelin thrower will be looking to move up in the record books as junior Macauley Garton will look to make his second PR mark of the season.  His top throw of 69.69m (228-8) started his season at the SIUE Cougar Classic in March, and held him at the No. 3 spot on the All-Time Top Ten list.

In the women's pole vault, the trio of senior Heather Green, junior Maggie Givens, and freshman Alyssa Applebee will be back on the runway after their sweep at the Missouri Relays.  Green won the meet with her PR jump of 4.00m (13-1.5), which earned her a new Meet Record and kept her at No. 3 in the record books.  Both Givens and Applebee claim the No. 4 spot with their top mark of 3.87m (12-8.25) from the Crimson Tide Invitational.
