COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou track and field team wrapped up action at the Illini Classic in Champaign, Ill., on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 21) at the Illinois Armory and got several notable performances on both the men's and women's side. In all, Mizzou claimed six event titles on the day, highlighted by the women's weigh throwers sweeping the top four spots of the event.
Starting on the women's side, senior Melissa Coil (Clark, Mo.) highlighted the sweep of the women's weight throw as she tossed 17.43m (57-2 ¼) to win the event. Teammate Cortni Ervin (Marshall, Mo.) took second overall at 17.21m (56-5 ¾) while Laura Greenfield (Liberty, Mo.) took third at 16.20m (53-1 ¾). Bethany Pfeiffer (Jackson, Mo.) finished fourth at 16.00m (52-6) to round out the sweep.
The women continued their winning ways when Camille Hayes (Indianapolis, Ind.) took the high jump title after clearing 1.68m (5-6). But the Tiger sophomore wasn't the only high spot in the event as teammate Morgan Whitson (Moberly, Mo.) took second a 1.63m (5-4 ¼).
Event winners on the men's side included senior captain Ryan Blackwell (Fenton, Mo.), who clocked a time of 49.35 in the 400m dash as he claimed his first event title of the season. Staying in the longer sprints, senior Ricky West (Scarborough, Ontario) won the 600-yard run with a time of 1:20.58 while teammate Tyrell Everett (Wichita, Kan.) took third in the event at 1:21.51.
Fresh off of his Big 12 Athlete of the Week performance last week, junior Malcolm Pennix (South Bend, Ind.) took home his second long jump title of the year after leaping 7.33m (24-0 ¾). Brooks Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) gave Mizzou a pair of event winners on the day as he claimed the shot put title with a throw of 17.98m (59-0).
Other notable performances for the Tiger men were sophomore Tre' Chambers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) who took third in the 60m dash at 6.82 in his season-debut. Freshman Kenny Cushing (Wentzville, Mo.) took second in the 800m run at 1:53.15 as well, coming back in the final 150 meters to earn the runner-up nod. Sophomore Merid Seleshi (Ontario, Canada) also earnd a runner-up nod with a time of 4:15.25 in the mile and the 4x400m relay team also picked up a runner-up finish with a time of 3:18.71, just seven hundredths of a second behind first-place Illinois.
Also, Jeremy Lampley (Ballwin, Mo.) had a nice performance in the triple jump, leaping 14.45m (47-5) to earn runner-up status as did Jacob Bullinger (Jackson, Mo.) in the weigh throw with a toss of 17.93m (58-10).
On the women's side, senior Leslie Farmer (Jefferson City, Mo.) took third in the 400m dash at 57.10 while teammate Landon Wachter (Jackson, Mo.) turned in a runner-up performance in the 800m run at 2:15.48. Pole vaulter Heather Green (Jefferson City, Mo.) took second in that event as well with a vault of 3.80m (12-5 ½).
