MU Cheer Squad Places Eighth at National Competition

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Missouri Cheer Squad turned in an impressive performance last weekend in Daytona Beach, Fla., where they finished eighth at the National Cheerleaders Association College Nationals.

The squad, coached by Suzy Thompson, placed eighth in the Small Coed Division, behind champion Oklahoma State (1st), Louisville (2nd), Charlotte (3rd), Middle Tennessee State (4th), Florida International (5th), Colorado (6th), and SMU (7th).

The top-10 finish marks the sixth consecutive year that Thompson's squad has turned in a top-10 showing at nationals.

At the same competition, Mizzou's own Truman the Tiger finished fifth in the mascot competition. Truman was named the nation's best mascot in 2004.

Making up Mizzou's Cheer Squad include: Adam Wiggins (St. Peters), Keith Broadway (St. Charles), Chelsea Brooks (Houston, Texas), Julia Browere (Wentzville), Casey Brown (Old Monroe), Corey Cathey (Hallsville), Chelsea Evans (Belleville), Caitlin Germeroth (Ozark), Amanda Gorecki (Plano, Texas), Arin Hennessey (Grain Valley), Shannon Ortega (Kansas City), Jenna Quick (Mt. Vernon, Ill.), Brittany Silverstein (St. Louis), Ahsleigh Tiek (St. Louis), Tara Travers (St. Louis), Ona Whelove (Fulton), Janean Wilke (Grain Valley), Megan Wilson (Moberly), Terri Winkler (Collinsville, Ill.), and Shannon Wylie (Jefferson City).

Competing for Mizzou as part of the Truman Team included: John Lyman (Columbia), Steve Edle (St. Louis), Jeremy Haley (Eldon), Jacob Kunce (Grandview), and Alex Scott (Marshall).
