Dr. Joe Scogin has been with the Department of Athletics since 2001. Dr. Scogin was elevated to Associate Athletic Director in 2011 after serving as Assistant Athletic Director since 2008 and Director of Academic Services since 2006.
As Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services, Dr. Scogin has oversight of the Academic Support component of the Total Person Program. The Total Person Program provides comprehensive academic and professional development resources to approximately 500 student-athletes. During his tenure at MU, Dr. Scogin has overseen a run of tremendous academic success as Mizzou student-athletes have achieved record Graduation Rates, Academic Progress Rates, and Grade Point Averages. Since 2006, MU has consistently been at the top of the Big 12 conference in Academic Progress Rates and Graduation Rates and has also led all public BCS institutions in Academic Progress Rates.
Dr. Scogin is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) where he serves on the Board of Directors as the Division Director for Professional Development and on the NCAA/N4A Consulting Project. Dr. Scogin is also actively involved in community service projects including his role as chair for the University United Way campaign where he helps coordinate a $700,000 annual campaign. Additionally, Scogin serves the Big 12 conference as a member of the Legislative Services Committee and the Academics Committee. During his time at MU, Scogin has served on numerous campus committees and as an instructor for MU's Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs) and a visiting instructor for Sports Venue Management.
Originally from Tucson, Ariz., Scogin graduated from Fort Hays State University with an undergraduate degree in Psychology in 1999 and a Masters in Sports Administration in 2001. In May 2007, Scogin earned his Ph.D. in Education, School, and Counseling Psychology from MU.
Scogin was a member of the Fort Hays State baseball team. At Fort Hays, Scogin was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and helped Fort Hays to Conference Championships in 1998 and 2000. The team earned regional bids in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and was the National Runner-up in 2000 finishing the season with a 54-12 record.
Scogin is married to the former Amanda Carazo. The two welcomed their first child, daughter Sienna Piper, in April 2009.
