Ed Stewart enters his sixth year as a member of the senior management team with the Missouri Athletic Department. As Associate Athletic Director for Administration, Stewart's responsibilities include direct oversight of football scheduling and travel, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's golf, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, video services and equipment operations.
Under Stewart's leadership, student-athlete support services have played an integral role in the overall success of MU Athletics. The Yeckel Training Center has seen a complete facelift, with the purchase of new state-of-the-art training equipment, as well as an increase in staff positions, and the MU Sports Medicine unit continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the conference.
Most recently, Stewart has directed searches that helped land top-notch personnel in several areas, including the men's golf and strength and conditioning head coaching positions, among others. He also had direct oversight of Mizzou's trip to the 2003 Independence Bowl - a trip that saw MU turn a profit despite the modest budget of the third-tier bowl game. Stewart is also leading the renegotiation of the department's apparel contract with Nike that will approach $3 million when it is finalized.
Stewart originally came to MU as the Director of Life Skills - a program that was recognized as one of the best in college athletics in 2002 by Division IA Athletic Directors. Stewart's involvement in the athletic department has also included participation in fundraising, strategic planning and the hiring of coaches and other departmental personnel.
A community leader, Stewart has been recognized by the Columbia Business Times "40 under 40" as one of the top 40 community leaders under 40 years old. He currently serves as a Tri-Chair for the Campus United Way Campaign, is on the Special Olympics State Board and was a recent finalist for the Major Mick Deaver Award by the MU Staff Advisory Council for "fostering better understanding and communication between students and staff."
A native of Chicago, Ill., Stewart graduated from Nebraska in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in English. The team captain of the 1994 Nebraska National Championship Football Team, Stewart was named the Big Eight Conference Defensive Player of the Year, was a Butkus Award finalist and a consensus all-American in 1994. Stewart played two years of professional football, most recently with the St. Louis Rams in 1996. In 2001, Stewart was named to the Nebraska Football All-Century team, and in 2004, will be inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame.
Prior to joining MU, Stewart spent two years as an academic counselor at Michigan State University, where he received a master's degree in Adult and Continuing Education in the spring of 2000.
He is married to the former Amy Wallace.
