Mizzou's Mike Alden Named 2013-14 NACDA President

University of Missouri Director of Athletics Mike Alden has been selected as the 2013-14 President of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

The announcement comes one year after Alden and campus administration led the University into the Southeastern Conference and follows unprecedented and aggressive renovation plans throughout the Sports Park at MU.

“We look forward to having Mike Alden serve as our President in 2013-14 and anticipate his leadership in enhancing NACDA’s ever expanding role  in intercollegiate athletics,” said NACDA Executive Director Bob Vecchione. “In addition, we want to welcome Chris Plonsky as our 3rd VP, along with the individuals listed below that are joining our Executive Committee. Lastly, I would like to thank our outgoing Executive Committee members and Past President Kevin Anderson for their leadership during their respective terms.”

In addition to Alden, Executive Committee members for 2013-14 include athletics directors Greg Byrne, University of Arizona; Brenda Hampton, Iowa Western Community College; Marcus Manning, Maryville University; Lee Reed, Georgetown University; and Jack Sullivan, County College of Morris.

“I’ve known Mike for a very long time and have enjoyed watching his career and all he has accomplished,” Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive said. “In his role as President of NACDA, he will bring energy, passion and commitment to the membership, and the organization will certainly benefit.”

Alden begins his 16th season at the helm of Mizzou Athletics and giving to athletics has reached unprecedented levels under his watch. In the classroom Missouri ranked among Southeastern Conference leaders in both Graduation Success Rates and Academic Progress Rates and on-field performances remained strong with 14-of-20 programs reaching postseason play.

“Mike has been an outstanding leader for Mizzou’s athletic program for many years, and we are very proud to see him contribute his exceptional skills at the national level,” University of Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton said of Alden’s appointment.

In addition to Alden and Plonsky, also elected to serve NACDA for the 2013-14 term were 1st Vice President Jim Phillips, director of athletics at Northwestern University; 2nd Vice President Tim Selgo, director of athletics at Grand Valley State University; and Don Tencher, director of athletics at Rhode Island College, to the third year of a five-year term as secretary.

The five administrators listed above join the following individuals on the Executive Committee – Southern Maine AD Al Bean; Rhode Island Associate AD/SWA Sue Bergen; Northwestern State AD Greg Burke; NCAA Senior VP-Championships Joni Comstock; John Brown AD Robyn Daugherty; North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham; Navy AD Chet Gladchuk; SMU AD Rick Hart; Pittsburg State AD Jim Johnson; RPI AD Jim Knowlton; New Mexico AD Paul Krebs; Davidson AD Jim Murphy; DePaul AD Jean Lenti Ponsetto;  West Chester AD Ed Matejkovic; Quinnipiac AD Jack McDonald; NAIA Director of Championships Eric Olson; Utah Valley AD Vince Otoupal; Carroll AD Bruce Parker; Ohio Northern AD Tom Simmons; Ferris State AD Perk Weisenburger; and Georgia Senior Associate AD Carla Williams.

Phillips, who enters his sixth year as Director of Athletics at Northwestern, worked with Alden at Arizona State.
