Scherzer and Bales Earns Student-Athlete Honors

Missouri sophomore Max Scherzer (baseball) and junior Amanda Bales (track and field) were named this week's Lathrop & Gage student-athletes of the week. Both students hold above a 3.0 grade-point average, are successful members on their respective teams and are active in the community through various outreach programs.

Scherzer, a pitcher from Chesterfield, Mo., holds a 3.21 grade-point average in Business. He is the Friday starter for the baseball team, and combined to pitch the teams' first no-hitter since 1981, against Texas Tech April 1, winning by a score of 25-0. Scherzer leads the team in strikeouts per nine innings and starters in earned run average. Off the diamond Scherzer and his teammates help with youth clinics held throughout the season.

A native of Bettendorf, Iowa Bales holds a 3.90 grade-point average in physical therapy. Bales, a member of the Missouri Cross Country team that took 13th at last years NCAA Championships, she also runs distance races for the Track team. Off the track Bales serves as a Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) representative.

The baseball team takes on Southwest Missouri State at 6:30p.m., Tuesday at Taylor Stadium before heading to Nebraska for a showdown with the Huskers this weekend. The track and field team will travel to Manhattan, Kan., may 13-15, for the ninth annual Big 12 outdoor track and field championships.
