COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri Department of Athletics has named Doug Gillin Deputy Athletic Director, as announced today by Director of Athletics Mike Alden. Gillin, 42, is returning to Mizzou for his second stint, after serving four previous years as assistant marketing director (1995-97) and as general manager of Mizzou Sports Properties (1997-99).
Gillin returns to Mizzou after spending the past 12 years in various roles with IMG College (previously ISP Sports), the country's leading collegiate multimedia, marketing and licensing/brand management company. Since September of 2010, Gillin has served as a senior vice president for college properties, where he assisted in the development of corporate strategy in all facets of IMG College, including oversight of all local and regional sales. Prior to that, Gillin was an executive vice president/chief sales officer (2007-10) and senior vice president (2002-07) on the regional level for ISP, after serving as general manager for Syracuse (University) Sports Properties from 1999-2002.
During his time with ISP and IMG College, Gillin managed the entire sales force, which included approximately 350 employees with over 90 university and conference partnerships.
"We are very pleased to be able to recruit Doug back to Mizzou," said Alden. "I've personally enjoyed watching his career path since he left over a decade ago, and always entertained thoughts of getting him back here in some fashion. Doug is a high-energy person with great character and outstanding people skills, and he's got a very well-rounded professional experience that will translate very well to his role here," he said.
In his role at Mizzou, Gillin will oversee all external operations facets for Athletics, which include the Tiger Scholarship Fund, Ticketing, Strategic Communications, Mizzou Sports Properties and Game Operations. He will also focus on leading the upcoming capital campaign, as Mizzou Athletics looks to make a major facilities improvement push as it heads into the Southeastern Conference.
"I'm really excited to have the opportunity to come back to Mizzou and work with Mike Alden and the tremendous staff there," Gillin said. "It's an honor to be able to come in at such an historic period of time and being part of the move to the SEC. This is a monumental time for Mizzou Athletics, and I'm looking forward to reengaging with all of my old friends in the athletic department, the university and the community. I'm excited to bring my wife, Leslie, and our family to Columbia," he said.
A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Gillin was a four-year ice hockey letterman at SUNY-Cortland, serving as team co-captain in 1990, and winning team most valuable player honors in both 1990 and 1991. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education with a concentration in sport management in 1991, and later earned a master's degree in athletic administration at Ohio University in 1993, where he also served as a graduate teaching assistant and assistant hockey coach. Gillin was born May 28, 1969. He and his wife, Leslie (a Richmond, Va. native and 1992 graduate of Radford University), are the parents of daughters Shea (5), Lia (1), and son Chase (3).
