COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Athletics is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with the MU College of Education and Columbia Public Schools which will honor local grade school children for their scholastic and leadership achievements. Called the RALLY Club - which stands for Recognizing Achievement, Learning and Leadership in our Youth - the program will reward boys and girls who have made personal gains in their school accomplishments and who have contributed positively to the learning community as a student leader.
The first two students to be recognized by the RALLY Club were a pair of fourth-graders from Columbia's Russell Boulevard Elementary School - Kaveughn Carter and Clarence Moore. They were honored at Tuesday's men's basketball game against Alabama, and met with members of the Mizzou basketball team afterward.
Russell Boulevard Elementary is serving as the RALLY Club pilot program this spring, with the intent of honoring high achievers throughout the spring semester at a variety of Mizzou Athletic sporting events. Future plans call for the program to expand within the Columbia Public Schools system. A ticket donation program for the RALLY Club is being planned, which will allow local area businesses and individual contributors to donate or purchase tickets which will be provided to the RALLY Club program, with a particular focus on men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling. Details for the donation program will be announced when finalized.
"We are very excited about the RALLY Club program, and for the special partnership between Mizzou Athletics and the College of Education and Columbia Public Schools," said Deputy Athletic Director Doug Gillin. "We believe this is a unique program that will provide many special opportunities for lots of deserving children. It also reinforces to our youth just how important the link is between academic and athletic achievement, and leadership," said Gillin.
"It has always been a dream of mine to bring students to MIZZOU athletic events to promote academic success and positive behavior," said Russell Elementary Assistant Principal Amanda Bruckerhoff. "I am thrilled with the partnership we have created between Russell Boulevard Elementary and The University of Missouri. As a school administrator, nothing is more rewarding than developing relationships with students and showing them anything is possible when they work hard and believe in themselves, and RALLY Club enforces this in a positive and exciting way!" she said.
"I am pleased that our college can team up with MU Athletics and CPS to recognize children for excellence inside and outside the classroom," says Daniel L. Clay, dean of the MU College of Education. "This is one of several ways our College of Education and MU athletics benefits from our strong partnership with CPS," he said.
