On another unusually cool August morning, with temperatures near 70 degrees, the Tigers set out for another practice Wednesday on Faurot Field. This practice was another positive one for the Tigers, especially for the offense because they were able to win back the black jerseys after the defense wore them for two days. The result evened the count during fall camp to four wins apiece for the offense and defense.

The practice was cut short by about 20 minutes, in order to keep everyone fresh for Thursday morning's scrimmage. Additionally, the afternoon practice was called off, and instead the team will be going to the movies, with the two options being "The Other Guys" or "The Expendables."

Coach Gary Pinkel said the day was good overall.

"I thought it was a good, spirited practice, a lot of competition out there as always," Pinkel said. "The offense won today, so we're tied up 4-4 in our summer championship they're competing for," he said.

Tomorrow's scrimmage is a big day for the team, Pinkel said.

"It's a real important day tomorrow again to see where our football team is, to see where we've improved offensively and defensively, and I'm talking more in terms of the first and second team and then the competition for the depth and all those other things," Pinkel said. "Our goal tomorrow will be to get 35 plays or so with ones, twos and threes, a little less than that with fours," he added.

Senior CB Kevin Rutland left practice Wednesday about midway through the day due to what Coach Pinkel termed a "small back strain," and Pinkel said he didn't come back with the hope of being able to play Thursday. He also said that injured WR Kerwin Stricker (groin, ankle) is going to get another test done to help team trainers further diagnose his injury, and thus the timetable for his return isn't known just yet.

Here were some highlights from today's practice…

During inside run drill work, the offense claimed a win on the last play, when tied at 6-6, TB De'Vion Moore, who returned to the field after missing practice Tuesday for family reasons, hit a nice gainer off left tackle that was blocked very well by the offensive line, and Moore also got a great downfield seal block by TE Michael Egnew that allowed him more space on the play…

One player who has done a really nice job of catching the ball in camp is sophomore WR Gahn McGaffie. He seems to be making the most of his increased opportunities that have come his way as the injury bug has run through much of the wideout position group. We're certainly not offering any assessment on what his playing time situation will look like this season, but he's definitely making good impressions…

When the play went to 11-on-11 today, some of the highlights…

QB Blaine Gabbert throws a nice pass to WR T.J. Moe for nearly 10 yards. Next, Gabbert throws a sailing pass caught by Moe for a 20 yard gain on the play. Gabbert makes another good pass to WR L'Damian Washington who weaves up the field for a 15 yard gain. During QB James Franklin's turn on the field, he ran up the middle for a 15 yard gain as well. The defense stops the offense's good luck when B. Gabbert throws a long high pass intended for WR Rolandis Woodland, but DB E.J. Gaines is on the coverage and keeps Woodland away…

Later, QB Jimmy Costello threw over the middle to WR Bud Sasser who made an outstanding catch as he dove and made a finger-tip grab. Costello then throws an admirable pass to WR Jaleel Clark who makes a great catch on the play. On a hand off by Costello to TB Henry Josey, the offense gains nearly 15 yards on the play. The offense is racking up the points during the first 11 on 11. The defense gains some points when QB Tyler Gabbert throws an incomplete pass intended for TE Eric Waters, with DB Munir Prince on the coverage, knocking Waters out of bounds. The offense wins this round when B. Gabbert throws a complete pass to WR Wes Kemp for a 10 yard gain.

During the final round of 11 on 11, QB James Franklin makes four points for the offense with complete passes and handoffs to gain several yards for the offense. Next, B. Gabbert comes in with a handoff to TB Derrick Washington who weaves swiftly in and out of the defense until he goes out of bounds with a few yards gained on the play. Then, B. Gabbert throws a tremendous pass to Moe who makes an amazing catch with DB Carl Gettis right on his tail. QB Ashton Glaser makes his mark for the offense when he enters the drill to and throws a swing pass to TB Jared Culver for the touchdown on 3rd and goal. This gives the offense a big lead. On Glaser's next pass he is able to score another touchdown by connecting with Culver again. Gettis gains points back for the defense though as he keeps L. Washington from catching a pass thrown by B. Gabbert. However, this was not enough to keep the defense on top.
